Dan Buckman, BB&T

Welcome to the NextGen Board Member Interview Series, where we highlight the diversity of talent, goals and backgrounds within the group.

Our NextGen Board is a group who leads the charge to bring events and networking opportunities to young professionals in the Fredericksburg Region. Any business that is a Chamber Member has the opportunity to send their team members who are 21-40 to our events! NextGen hosts professional development events, community service opportunities, and networking meet ups.

We are kicking off this series with Board Member Dan Buckman.

Dan Buckman is a Wealth Advisor with BB&T and joined the NextGen Board in 2019. He is passionate about growing the opportunities we can provide for our network of young professionals. We hope you enjoy getting to know Dan!

What was your first Job?
I feel like I always was helping my parents and neighbors with yardwork and earning a few extra bucks, but at age 14 I donned an apron and served up some ice cream at the local Dairy Queen down in Williamsburg, VA.

What is your current role?
For the past couple of years, I’ve served Fredericksburg as a Wealth Advisor with BB&T.  My job is to understand folks, ask good questions, and empower them to make the most of their financial lives.  Many people don’t realize how much little tweaks can benefit them over the long-run.  I love helping families discover and then implement those tweaks.

What does a day look like in your role?
On a given day, I may have up to 4 client meetings spread across BB&T’s 10 local branches, with a handful of short conversations with my product specialists peppered in between.  Within client meetings, my job is to think creatively and ask good questions – whether we’re just starting out, or getting close to the finish line.  Without enough context, no advice can be good advice!  I enjoy taking our time and really getting to know my clients before diving into any recommendations.

What is your favorite part of NextGen?
The energy! I enjoy being surrounded by people that are ambitious and smart in their own ways. Not only is everyone working hard on their careers and hobbies, but also everyone seems to have an eye toward something bigger.  I regularly chat up my NextGen colleagues to talk about something I saw or an idea I had to make Fredericksburg better.  It’s a great feeling to be part of a group that’s taking responsibility for a small part of our big future – and making things happen!

What do you see for NextGen within the next year?
Through its relationship with the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, NextGen really has some serious potential to shape the growth of our community.  There are many opportunities seeking us out, and there’s a lot to do!  What we need are more hands to help!  I believe our biggest challenge is finding and connecting with many of the other young professionals around Fredericksburg, and reinforcing NextGen’s ability to act.  I believe this time next year NextGen will have made strides toward getting the word out and bringing in more of the talent that’s already here.

Where is your favorite place to travel?
Last year, I was in Hawaii and it was just unreal. It was probably the most naturally beautiful place I’ve ever been to. I went surfing, hiking, scuba diving, and of course, sampling the local breweries! It was a lot of fun to chat up the locals and really feel the Aloha.  Can’t wait to go back!

Who was your role model growing up?
In many ways, my dad.  I say that because we butted heads a lot when I was a kid, but he still found a way to be that little voice in the back of my mind.  I never wanted to become a surgeon like he was, but I did push myself at times to accomplish tough goals like he did, and to do good in the world like he did.  He always impressed upon me that “a good reputation is more valuable than money.”  My dad definitely had a bigger impact on who I’ve become than anyone else.

Where can we find you after work?
When I leave the office, I’m usually either unwinding with friends and colleagues at a Happy Hour downtown, or I’m enjoying some sun and playing basketball up at Pratt Park.  On the weekends, I try to visit my parents in Richmond while keeping an eye out for some of Fredericksburg’s finest events, like the ones Ducks Unlimited or Friends of the Rappahannock host each year.  There’s so much to do!

If you could have a theme song, what would it be?
