The City of Fredericksburg Department of Social Services provides the following update on the evolving situation for the SNAP benefit distribution for November.

The Governor of Virginia declared a state of emergency and the Commonwealth will be loading emergency nutrition benefits to EBT cards of current SNAP clients beginning the first week of November.  The City is very grateful to the Commonwealth for their actions to support SNAP beneficiaries while the federal government is shut down.  Here are some important details to know:

  • Benefits will be loaded in weekly installments – not monthly, like the federal program
    • Example – if a recipient was to receive $800 in November in SNAP, then recipients would receive $200 per week in November until the shutdown is resolved
  • Benefits will be distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning the first week of November
  • Clients are encouraged to check their benefit balances before shopping
  • Additional details are available at the Virginia Department of Social Services website – www.dss.virginia.gov

The City Council, at their meeting of October 28, provided additional supplemental support to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank.  The Food Bank will be providing additional food distributions through existing food pantries as well as additional “pop-up” distributions in the City during November.  Additional information about the Food Bank, including how to donate and how to volunteer, is available at the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank website – www.fredfood.org.
