The Fredericksburg Advance daily online newspaper is pleased to announce Adele Uphaus, former reporter for The Free Lance-Star, as managing editor.

The FXBG Advance is the region’s new online newspaper covering Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. It began publication early this year and became a full-fledged online publication in August.

Uphaus covered education for The Free Lance-Star and was responsible for much of its investigative reporting about the dysfunctional Spotsylvania County School Board. She has received numerous awards from the Virginia Press Association for her reporting.

She will continue to oversee the education beat, expanding her role to coverage of Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Fredericksburg. She will also help oversee coverage of the three local governments.

Uphaus received her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Mary Washington and her Master of Arts degree in literature from George Mason University where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the English Department and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

She has children in local public schools and enjoys reading, cross-stitch, chocolate, and music. She is an accomplished singer. She also fosters animals through the Fredericksburg SPCA.

Uphaus’ hiring follows the recent onboarding of Vanessa Sekinger as The Advance’s theater critic and Sunday Books & Culture Editor.

Former Free Lance-Star editorial page Editor Martin Davis is editor-in-chief of The Advance, a non-profit subsidiary of Fredericksburg Parent & Family magazine, which is in its 22nd year serving the region.
