For a decade, Dr. David Corderman has brought a lifetime of leadership experience to the Leadership Fredericksburg faculty, helping participants explore what it means to lead with character, purpose and impact.
Dave’s leadership journey has taken him from the U.S. Marine Corps to the FBI and into classrooms and leadership programs around the world. He served four years as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps before beginning a distinguished 24-year career as an FBI special agent.
During his time with the FBI, Dave spent eight and a half years on the agency’s Hostage Rescue Team and ultimately served as Chief of the FBI Leadership Development Institute. In that role, he was responsible for leadership training across the FBI’s 30,000-member workforce as well as outreach leadership programs for international, federal, state and local law enforcement executives.
Today, as Senior Partner with Academy Leadership Associates, LLC, Dave continues to share his expertise as an internationally recognized leadership training professional. He frequently lectures on leadership and is the co-author of Leading to Make a Difference—Ethical, Character Driven Law Enforcement.
His impact on Leadership Fredericksburg extends well beyond the classroom. Dave has served as a mentor in the program eight times and currently serves as a program co-facilitator. In 2016, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber recognized his extraordinary service with the Joseph L. Argenzio Award for going “above and beyond the call of duty” for the Chamber.
Dave’s commitment to leadership and service also extends nationally and internationally. He has held leadership roles with the Leadership in Counterterrorism Alumni Association, FBI National Executive Institute Associates, Families of the Wounded Fund and Hostage Rescue Team Association.
He holds a B.A. in Social Relations from Lehigh University, an MPA from Virginia Commonwealth University, an M.S. from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, where his dissertation research focused on using multi-rater feedback to improve leadership performance within the FBI.
As Leadership Fredericksburg celebrates its 20th year, Dave’s decade on the faculty represents an important part of the program’s legacy. Through years of teaching, mentoring and facilitating, he has helped challenge Leadership Fredericksburg participants to think more deeply about how they lead and the difference they can make in their organizations and communities.
