September is Workforce Development Month, a time to recognize the people, programs, and partnerships that strengthen our local workforce. But building a strong workforce doesn’t begin when someone submits a job application. It begins much earlier, when a student first discovers a career they didn’t know existed, develops the skills employers value, and has an opportunity to experience the workplace firsthand.
In Spotsylvania County Public Schools, our Work-Based Learning Continuum is designed around three stages: Explore, Equip, and Experience. From kindergarten through graduation, we are creating opportunities for students to discover careers, build skills, make professional connections, and ultimately step into their futures with greater confidence and preparation.
But we can’t do it without our business community.
EXPLORE: Help students discover what’s possible.
Sometimes workforce development starts with a conversation. A business professional sharing their career story, a behind-the-scenes workplace tour, or an employer participating in a career fair can introduce a young person to an opportunity they may never have considered.
Our Explore opportunities span K-12 and include career fairs, industry tours, Career Chats, the 4E Expo, the Regional Intern Expo, and other career exploration experiences.
Your role might be as simple as giving an hour of your time. Host a tour. Speak with students. Participate in a career event. Show students what your industry looks like and the many pathways that can lead them there.
EQUIP: Help students build the skills to succeed.
Knowing about a career is only the beginning. Students also need opportunities to develop the professional and employability skills that will help them succeed in any workplace.
Through mentorship experiences, service-learning projects, resume workshops, mock interviews, and other career-connected activities, students begin learning through work.
This is where our business partners become coaches, mentors, and advisors. Conduct a mock interview. Review a resume. Mentor a student. Give feedback on a project. Help students understand the communication, problem-solving, teamwork, professionalism, and technical skills that matter in your workplace.
EXPERIENCE: Give students the opportunity to put it all together.
At the Experience level, students move from learning about careers to applying their knowledge and skills in authentic settings. Opportunities include 40-hour field experiences, internships, apprenticeships, clinical experiences, supervised agricultural experiences, entrepreneurship, and school-based enterprises.
Businesses can host a student, provide mentorship, collaborate with a class on an authentic project, or partner with a school-based enterprise. These experiences allow students to test-drive careers while giving employers an opportunity to help develop their future talent pipeline.
There Is a Place for Every Business
One of the biggest misconceptions about Work-Based Learning is that becoming a business partner means committing to an internship or hiring a student.
It doesn’t.
There is an entry point for every organization and every level of availability.
Maybe you have one hour to share your career story. Maybe your team can host 20 students for a workplace tour. Maybe you can mentor a class as they solve a real-world problem for your organization. Or maybe you are ready to host an intern or apprentice.
Every interaction matters.
When businesses open their doors, share their expertise, and invest their time, students gain something that schools cannot provide alone: a connection between what they are learning today and where it could take them tomorrow.
And our community benefits, too. Students begin to see that meaningful careers and opportunities exist right here at home. Employers have an opportunity to shape and connect with their future workforce. Together, we create a stronger talent pipeline for our region.
This Workforce Development Month, we invite our local business community to find your place in our WBL continuum.
Help a student Explore. Help them Equip. Give them an opportunity to Experience.
Whether you have an hour, a day, a project, or a position, there is a way to make an impact.
