(Fredericksburg, VA) February 19, 2026 – The City of Fredericksburg continues making progress on its multi-phase effort to have the Dominion Energy-owned streetlights converted to energy-efficient LED fixtures. The initiative supports City Council’s sustainability goals while improving lighting reliability and reducing long-term energy consumption.

There are currently 1,489 Dominion-owned streetlights within the City. Two phases of the LED conversion project have already been completed, with additional planned upgrades underway.

Completed phases include:

  • Phase 1 (Mayfield): 95 streetlights converted to LED in December 2024
  • Phase 2 (Central Park): 82 streetlights converted to LED August 2025
  • Phase 3, currently in the design stage by Dominion Energy, will convert 245 streetlights along major travel corridors, including: Emancipation Highway, Dixon Street, William Street, Cowan Boulevard, Plank Road

Design work for Phase 3 is expected to be completed by the end of February. Project installation is anticipated to be finished between late May and early June.

The LED streetlight conversion is already producing measurable results. In 2025, the City’s primary Dominion streetlight account used 83,653 fewer kilowatt-hours of electricity compared to 2024, resulting in a reduction of approximately 30.7 metric tons of carbon-dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) greenhouse gas emissions.

LED streetlights provide several important benefits for the community. Compared to traditional lighting, LED fixtures use significantly less energy, have a longer service life, and require less maintenance. They also provide more consistent, uniform illumination that can improve nighttime visibility for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. These upgrades help reduce operating costs while supporting the City’s environmental and sustainability goals.

The City will continue working with Dominion Energy to plan future conversion phases as part of Fredericksburg’s ongoing commitment to operational efficiency and environmental stewardship. Streetlight LED conversions citywide are expected to be completed by FY 2028.
