(Fredericksburg, VA) January 27, 2025 – After more than 23 years of service to the citizens of Fredericksburg, Brenda Wood is retiring as the City of Fredericksburg’s Treasurer at the end of the year and will not be running for reelection in November.
Wood took office as the City of Fredericksburg’s Treasurer in January 2014. Prior to her service as Treasurer, Wood served under G.M. Haney, Treasurer and mentor, as his Chief Deputy Treasurer.
During her time as Treasurer, Wood has been a member of the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia, and has served on various committees. Under her direction, the City of Fredericksburg Treasurer’s Office has achieved accreditation, implemented a new financial software system including tax software and, in response to citizen needs, recently upgraded the city’s online payment portal to offer options for paperless billing, auto pay and other features.
“I am honored to have served the citizens of this great city for the past 23 years and proud of the accomplishments of this office,” stated Brenda Wood. “Everything accomplished has been by teamwork and keeping our citizens’ needs in mind. I am blessed to have a dream-team staff and I know that our residents will continue to receive the great service that has always defined this office. I have loved my job but it is time for me to focus more on family and on serving my community in different ways.”
The Treasurer serves as a Constitutional Officer and is elected by the residents of Fredericksburg for a four-year term. The primary responsibility of the Treasurer is the financial management of all City funds and assuring that they are processed and maintained with proper security and accounting controls in place.
Interested persons who wish to run for the Office of Treasurer for the next term must file a complete candidate packet, including signed Statement of Organization by June 17, 2025. The election for the office of Treasurer will be held in November 2025, and the new term of office will begin January 1, 2026.
