Try something before you keep reading. Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Google AI and ask it to recommend a business like yours in your industry, in your area. See what comes back.

If your name shows up, good. If it does not, you just found a gap that no amount of Google ranking, business cards, or Chamber mixers will fix.

Here is what almost nobody in this room is talking about yet, and why that silence is your opening.

The Search Box Is Disappearing

For twenty years, the game was Search Engine Optimization. Rank on page one of Google, get found, get clicked, get the call. That game still matters, but it is no longer the whole game.

More of your customers are not typing a search into Google anymore. They are asking an AI assistant a question and taking whatever answer it hands them, one recommendation, no scrolling, no ten blue links to compare. If the AI does not know who you are, or worse, confuses you with someone else entirely, you are not in the running. You never even got considered.

This is Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. It is the discipline of making sure AI platforms can find you, understand what you actually do, and recommend you accurately when someone asks. Most business owners have never heard the term. That will not last much longer, and the businesses that figure it out first will have a real head start over the ones still optimizing for a search box that is losing relevance.

What I Learned When I Checked My Own Name

Earlier this year, I ran the test I just asked you to run. I typed my own name and my own work into the major AI platforms to see what would come back.

It was not flattering. The AI could not reliably tell me apart from other people who share my name. My frameworks, my credentials, thirty years of hard work, none of it was showing up in a way that made sense. If a potential client asked an AI to recommend a Fractional COO or an AI strategy consultant, I was not in that answer.

So, I partnered with Daisy Watkins of DW Conceptz, who built the ARCHITECT Framework specifically for this problem, and we went to work. We restructured how my

expertise, credentials, and results were represented online so that AI platforms could actually read and verify them, not guess at them.

The result: I now show up as the number one cited result across ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI, and Google Search when someone asks about my exact work. A referral reached out within an hour of the updated presence going live, someone who found me through an AI recommendation, not a Google search.

Here is the part that matters to everyone reading this on the Chamber’s site specifically: one of the sources AI cites back when it recommends me is the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce itself. Your Chamber membership, your event listings, the blog you are reading right now, all of it is source material AI platforms pull from when they decide who to recommend. That is not a small detail. It means the relationship you already have with this Chamber is quietly doing AEO work for you whether you have optimized for it or not. The only question is whether what it finds is accurate, current, and complete.

Three Questions Worth Asking About Your Own Business

You do not need to hire anyone to start. You need to get honest about where you actually stand.

1. Does AI know what you actually do? Ask ChatGPT or Claude to describe your business. If the answer is vague, outdated, or wrong, that is not the AI’s fault. It means your online presence has not given it anything solid to work with.

2. Would AI recommend you, or just mention you? There is a difference between an AI knowing you exist and an AI putting your name forward as the answer to someone’s question. Only one of those gets you the client.

3. Are you the same story everywhere? AI platforms cross-reference. If your website, your LinkedIn, and your Google Business profile tell three slightly different versions of what you do, the AI has to guess which one is true. It usually guesses wrong, or it says nothing at all.

Why This Matters More for Small Businesses, Not Less

If you are a small business, a nonprofit, or a government contractor without a marketing department, you might assume this is a big company problem. It is the opposite. Large companies have the budget to buy visibility through paid placement and volume of content. You do not have that budget. AEO is not about spending more, it is about being accurately represented so the free recommendation goes to you instead of a competitor with a bigger ad budget and a less relevant answer.

This is the same principle behind everything I have written about this year, using AI to save time and make money, leading with trust when your team is anxious, scaling without burning out. All of it falls apart if nobody can find you to begin with. It is also the same principle behind the branding and LinkedIn masterminds I have led here, including, at the Chamber. Your brand and your LinkedIn presence are not separate

from AEO; they are the raw material it runs on. AI cannot recommend a story you have not told clearly and consistently in the first place.

See the Full Case Study, Live and Free

I am not going to try to teach the full methodology in a blog post. It deserves more room than that, and honestly, it is more useful to walk through it live where you can ask questions specific to your own business.

On Monday, July 27 at 8:00 PM ET, Daisy Watkins and I are hosting a free live session on Zoom called “Is AI Recommending You? The AEO Case Study Reveal.” We are walking through exactly what changed, why it worked, and what any business owner in this room can take from it, whether you run a two-person shop or a growing team. It is 45 minutes including live Q&A, capped at 50 seats. Register here: Is AI Recommending You? The AEO Case Study Reveal

Ask ChatGPT or Claude to recommend a business like yours today. Then come find out what to do if you do not like the answer.
