Fredericksburg, VA (April 8, 2026) – Downtown Fredericksburg’s Caroline Street has been
named the Best Main Street in the South by Garden & Gun Magazine, winning the publication’s
annual bracket-style competition and claiming the title among 16 standout downtowns from
across the Southern United States.
The title comes after a three week, community-powered campaign that saw Caroline Street
advance through four rounds of public voting, defeating contenders from across the south
before prevailing in the championship round against Woodland Boulevard in DeLand, Florida.
“This title belongs to every person who voted, every business owner who shared a link, and
every resident who showed up for Downtown Fredericksburg,” said Chris Allen, Executive
Director of Fredericksburg Main Street. “Caroline Street has always been special and now the
whole South knows it.”
Garden & Gun Magazine chose the original Sweet 16 contenders based on community-minded
layouts, wealth of independent businesses, historical significance and overall sense of place.
Winners were determined entirely by public vote, making Fredericksburg’s championship a
direct reflection of an engaged and passionate community.
Caroline Street is a brick-lined street, in Downtown Fredericksburg’s historic district, just over an
hour south of Washington, D.C. and embodies the qualities that have defined downtown
Fredericksburg for centuries: walkable charm, locally owned shops and restaurants, year-round
events, and a deep connection to American history. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and
James Monroe all walked these streets.
“Downtown Fredericksburg has always been powered by community,” Allen added. “This
recognition is a reminder of what we can accomplish when we all show up for one another.”
Fredericksburg Main Street thanks the Mayor of the City of Fredericksburg, City Council
Representatives, residents, businesses, visitors, and regional supporters whose enthusiasm
and participation made this win possible.
