Fredericksburg, VA, October 16, 2025 – Mary Washington Hospital is proud to announce that its Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program has been granted full accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the sole accrediting body for pharmacy residency programs in the United States.
Following a comprehensive survey conducted in March 2025, and a thorough review by the ASHP Commission on Credentialing in August, the Commission approved accreditation for the PGY1 program at Mary Washington Hospital. The ASHP Board of Directors formally accepted the Commission’s recommendation in September.
Accreditation has been granted for a four-year term, through 2029, recognizing the program’s commitment to excellence in pharmacy education and training. The program has been in candidate status since its inception in June 2024.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Mary Washington Hospital is a 52-week training program designed to strengthen residents’ clinical, communication, and management skills in preparation for a continued career in hospital pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, or pharmacy management. The program focuses on transitioning residents from pharmacy students to experienced pharmacists who provide exceptional patient care in an ever-changing profession.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from ASHP,” said John Coggins, RPh, MBA, Director of Pharmacy, Mary Washington Hospital. “This accreditation affirms the dedication of our pharmacy team to providing high-quality education and advancing the practice of pharmacy in our health system.”
“This accreditation marks an exciting step forward,” said Sarah Yohey, PharmD, Manager, Pharmacy Clinical Programs and Pharmacy Residency Program Director, Mary Washington Hospital. “It allows us to expand opportunities for pharmacists in our region and continue building a strong pipeline of clinical talent right here at Mary Washington Hospital.”
ASHP accreditation is a mark of distinction that reflects a residency program’s adherence to rigorous standards and its ability to prepare pharmacists for clinical practice in a variety of health system settings.
