Today, the Chamber welcomed two of the Fredericksburg region’s most influential healthcare leaders for a timely discussion on the future of care in our community: Ryan DeWeese, Chief Executive Officer of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, and Dr. Christopher D. Newman, President & CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare.
As part of the Regionalism Matters series, this forum highlighted the essential role healthcare plays in shaping our region’s economy, workforce, and quality of life. The conversation, moderated by Susan Spears, President and CEO of the Chamber, explored both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for local hospitals and the communities they serve.
Key Themes from the Discussion
Workforce Recruitment & Development
Both leaders emphasized that recruiting top healthcare talent remains one of the most pressing challenges. They shared strategies hospitals are using to remain competitive, including building strong talent pipelines through partnerships with local schools, colleges, and training programs. Developing homegrown talent was noted as critical for sustaining the healthcare workforce of the future.
Innovation & Technology
The panelists discussed the integration of new technologies such as telehealth, AI-driven diagnostics, robotics, and data security enhancements. While these tools bring opportunities for more efficient, personalized care, they also raise questions about cybersecurity and patient privacy.
Future Opportunities
When asked about the most promising career opportunities in healthcare, both leaders pointed to roles in nursing, allied health, and technology-enabled care. Looking ahead, they agreed that the single greatest challenge will be sustaining access to affordable care amid rising costs and workforce pressures.
Optimism for the Future
Despite the challenges, both DeWeese and Newman expressed optimism about the region’s ability to meet healthcare needs through collaboration, innovation, and a strong sense of community. The ongoing partnership between hospitals, businesses, educators, and policymakers was cited as the key driver of progress.
Inspiring the Next Generation
In addition to business and community leaders, 25 freshmen and sophomores from Stafford High School’s CHAMP program attended the forum. The program, designed to introduce students to healthcare and career opportunities, gave these future professionals a chance to hear directly from top hospital leaders about the realities and innovations shaping the field. Their presence was a powerful reminder that today’s conversations about healthcare are also about preparing tomorrow’s workforce.
The State of Healthcare conversation underscored a vital truth: the future of regional healthcare is a shared responsibility. By working together across sectors, the Fredericksburg region can strengthen access, innovate care delivery, and ensure healthier communities for decades to come.
