Fredericksburg, VA — Rappahannock United Way (RUW) is excited to announce its participation in this year’s Read Across America Week taking place from March 3rd through March 7th and emphasizing its commitment to education as a core focus area and mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community. RUW is partnering with Head Start and VPI programs across Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and King George counties to bring the joy of reading to early learners, helping to cultivate a love of books and build essential literacy skills.
Established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998, Read Across America Week is a nationwide initiative that promotes reading and literacy, particularly among young children. Celebrated annually during the first week of March, the event inspires students, teachers, parents, and community members to come together and share the power of reading.
“We’re thrilled to strengthen our partnerships with local schools and bring the love of reading to early learners,” said Jessica Chavez, RUW’s Volunteer Coordinator. “This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has been thinking about volunteering to connect with our cause. It’s a low-barrier way to make a difference and find inspiration through the magic of storytelling. It’s easy, fun, and incredibly rewarding!”
In addition to fostering a love of reading, RUW is committed to helping children and families develop essential life skills. During the event, every student and teacher will receive a free book along with age-appropriate financial literacy materials, promoting learning that extends beyond the classroom.
