Regional challenges rarely stop at county or city lines. Neither should the solutions.
That was the focus of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Regionalism Matters: From Strategy to Action program, where business, government, and economic development leaders came together to discuss how collaboration can shape the future of the Fredericksburg region.
The morning began with a presentation from Sarah Oldaker, Economic Development Program Director for the George Washington Regional Commission (GWRC), who provided an overview of the region’s newly developed Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). More than a planning document, the CEDS serves as a regional roadmap for economic growth, identifying shared priorities and opportunities while bringing together leaders from across the public, private, nonprofit, workforce, and education sectors to build a stronger future.
The conversation continued with a panel featuring Chip Boyles, Executive Director of the George Washington Regional Commission, Susan Spears, President and CEO of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Tom Scott, President of Virginia’s Innovation Crossroads Alliance. While each organization serves a different purpose, together they represent three essential pillars of regional success.
The George Washington Regional Commission helps local governments work together on issues that affect the entire region. From transportation and housing to economic development and infrastructure planning, GWRC provides the long-term vision and coordination needed to address challenges that no single locality can solve alone.
The Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice of the business community, connecting employers, advocating for pro-business policies, supporting workforce development, and creating opportunities for collaboration that strengthen the regional economy. By bringing together leaders from business, education, nonprofit organizations, and local government, the Chamber helps turn conversations into partnerships and partnerships into action.
Virginia’s Innovation Crossroads focuses on building a thriving regional economy by attracting investment, supporting innovation, connecting talent, and creating strategic partnerships that position the Fredericksburg region for long-term competitiveness. Its mission reflects the belief that economic growth is strongest when organizations work together toward shared goals.
Individually, each organization plays an important role in strengthening our communities. Together, they demonstrate what regionalism looks like in practice.
Throughout the discussion, one message remained clear. The region’s greatest opportunities cannot be achieved by any one organization, jurisdiction, or industry working independently. Growing the workforce, improving infrastructure, supporting entrepreneurs, attracting employers, expanding housing options, and maintaining a high quality of life all require collaboration across sectors and across locality boundaries.
That is exactly what regionalism is about.
The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy provides the framework, but its success depends on leaders who are willing to work together to move those priorities forward. Events like Regionalism Matters create space for those conversations to happen, helping align organizations around common goals and encouraging the partnerships needed to create lasting impact.
The Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to serve as a convener of these important discussions and remains committed to advancing regional collaboration. This event marks one step in an ongoing conversation that will continue to bring together business, government, education, workforce, and community leaders to address shared challenges and seize shared opportunities.
The future of our region will not be defined by individual successes. It will be shaped by what we accomplish together.
