Recognition highlights commitment to high-quality, comprehensive breast care
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (June 23, 2026) – Mary Washington Healthcare has earned re-accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), demonstrating its commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered breast care.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, excluding skin cancers. NAPBC accredited programs follow a model that supports a multidisciplinary approach to care, ensuring patients have access to coordinated services across the continuum, including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
The accreditation sets rigorous standards for breast centers and promotes ongoing evidence-based care, continuous quality improvement, and enhanced patient outcomes.
“Continuing to earn NAPBC accreditation reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering coordinated, compassionate and high-quality care for our patients,” said Jennifer Freeland, MBA, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Associate Vice President, Nursing Operations, Ambulatory Services for Mary Washington Healthcare. “This recognition underscores the dedication of our physicians, nurses and care teams who work collaboratively to ensure every patient receives comprehensive support throughout their journey.”
“Breast cancer care is most effective when it is coordinated across specialties,” said Maithreyi Sarma, MD, Mary Washington Medical Oncology. “Maintaining this accreditation affirms that our program meets national standards for multidisciplinary care and continues to provide our patients access to advanced, evidence-based treatment close to home.”
As an NAPBC-accredited institution, Mary Washington Healthcare is also recognized as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. Being a Surgical Quality Partner signifies an institution’s dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches, while maintaining a critical eye on process at every step. The Surgical Quality Partner designation lets patients know that the health system is dedicated to quality and relentless self-improvement and has been verified or accredited by the ACS. Patients can trust that the care they receive at Surgical Quality Partner hospitals adheres to the most rigorous standards in surgical quality.
“ACS quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience, and participation is an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality,” said Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS, Executive Director and CEO of the American College of Surgeons. “As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, Mary Washington Healthcare has demonstrated its commitment to providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion, and dedicating themselves to continuous improvement.”
This re-accreditation reinforces Mary Washington Healthcare’s position as a regional leader in delivering evidence-based, high-quality breast care.
