The University of Mary Washington has opened enrollment for a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Business (MS in AI in Business), an innovative graduate program designed to prepare professionals for a rapidly evolving, AI-driven economy.

The graduate degree is the first of its kind in Virginia to focus specifically on artificial intelligence in a business context, combining advanced AI technologies with the strategic, ethical and leadership skills needed to translate those tools into real-world organizational impact.

“The MS in AI in Business is designed to equip students with the knowledge and applied skills to integrate AI technologies into organizational strategy, operations and innovation. Coursework will emphasize practical applications of machine learning, data analytics and ethical AI, preparing graduates to lead in a wide range of industries, including finance, marketing, healthcare and consulting,” said UMW Provost Tim O’Donnell. “Artificial intelligence is transforming how organizations operate, compete and serve their communities. This degree will prepare graduates to lead in this field.”

Designed for both working professionals and recent graduates, the program is offered 100% online in an asynchronous format, allowing students across Virginia and beyond to balance graduate study with professional and personal commitments.

“Organizations today don’t just need technical AI specialists – they need leaders who can connect data, technology and decision-making,” said Christopher Garcia, director of accreditation and graduate programs and professor of quantitative methods. “This degree is designed to bridge that gap, giving students hands-on experience applying AI tools to real business challenges while developing the strategic insight crucial to businesses today and in the future.”

Rooted in UMW’s liberal arts tradition, the program emphasizes communication, ethical reasoning and critical thinking alongside technical expertise, preparing graduates to navigate the complex societal and organizational implications of emerging technologies. The STEM-designated program integrates areas such as machine learning, generative AI and predictive analytics with core business disciplines including marketing, finance, operations and strategy.

Located in one of the nation’s fastest-growing technology corridors, between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, UMW is uniquely positioned to meet regional workforce demand for AI-fluent business leaders. The region’s concentration of federal agencies, contractors and technology firms continues to drive demand for professionals who can translate artificial intelligence into strategic advantage.

Students in the program will learn to evaluate AI opportunities, redesign workflows, manage organizational change and communicate across technical and executive teams.

The MS in AI in Business was approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) in May, with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) approval in June.

The program requires 30 credit hours and can be completed in as little as one year full-time or two years part-time. Graduate students can start their studies for the MS in AI in Business online in fall 2026.
